Keeping Rabbits Warm and Cool

Temperature control is very important for rabbits, as they can be sensitive to both heat and cold. Rabbits are particularly prone to overheating in warm weather, which can quickly lead to heatstroke. They can also struggle in very cold conditions, especially if they’re exposed to drafts or damp environments.

The ideal temperature range for rabbits is between 15–21°C (59–70°F), and prolonged exposure outside this range can put their health at risk.

To keep your rabbit safe and comfortable, avoid direct sunlight, cold drafts, and sudden changes in temperature.

A good tip to remember:
If you're rushing to switch on the air-con or reaching for an extra jumper, your rabbit will appreciate some climate control too!

🌞 Keeping Cool in Hot Weather

It’s very important to remember that rabbits can suffer heatstroke very quickly, so you need to be vigilant about keeping them cool during hot weather. Rabbits cannot sweat and rely on their ears and environment to regulate their body temperature, which means they can overheat faster than many people realise.

🌞 Remember, if YOU don’t want to sit out in the hot sun, your rabbit won’t want to either! Here are some tips to help keep your rabbit cool:

🌡️ Bring Them Indoors

We always recommend keeping rabbits indoors where temperatures are easier to control. If your rabbit normally lives outdoors, move their enclosure to a cool, well-ventilated room during hot days—especially during heatwaves.

🧊 Use Ice Bricks or Frozen Water Bottles

Wrap ice bricks or frozen water bottles in a towel and place them in their enclosure so your rabbit can lie beside them if they wish.

🌬️ Use Fans or Air Con

Use a fan or air conditioning in the room to help circulate cooler air. Make sure the fan is not blowing directly on your rabbit, but instead improving airflow in the space.

🧱 Provide Cool Surfaces (Pictured)

Rabbits love lying on cool surfaces. Ceramic tiles, marble slabs, or cooling mats placed in their enclosure can give them somewhere comfortable to stretch out and cool down.

💧 Keep Water Fresh and Full

Check and refill water bowls or bottles frequently throughout the day. You can also offer small amounts of watery greens like cucumber or leafy greens to help with hydration.

🪟 Curtains or Blinds Closed

Keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day to block out direct sunlight and help keep the room cooler.

🚫 Avoid Hot or Enclosed Spaces

Never place your rabbit’s enclosure in direct sun, near windows that trap heat, or on surfaces that retain heat. Always ensure there is good ventilation and shade.

❄️ Keeping Warm in Cold Weather

Cold weather can also be tough on rabbits, especially if they are exposed to drafts, damp conditions, or sudden drops in temperature. While rabbits cope with cooler weather better than heat, they can still suffer from hypothermia or respiratory illness if they aren’t kept warm and dry.

❄️ Remember, if YOU’re reaching for extra blankets or turning the heater on, your rabbit will appreciate some extra warmth too! Here are some ways to help keep your rabbit cosy during colder weather:

🏡 Bring Them Indoors
We always recommend keeping rabbits indoors where temperatures are easier to control. If your rabbit normally lives outside, move their enclosure into a sheltered indoor space during cold snaps or very chilly nights.

🛏️ Add Fleece Bedding
Soft fleece bedding or liners help insulate your rabbit from cold cage floors while giving them a comfortable place to rest.

🧸 Provide Fleece Hideys
Fleece hideys, snuggle sacks, or soft beds give rabbits a warm place to curl up and retain body heat.

🌾 Extra Hay to Burrow In
Provide plenty of fresh hay. Rabbits love to burrow and nest in hay, which naturally helps trap warmth and keep them comfortable.

🧱 Avoid Cold Surfaces
Cold tiles, metal shelving, or wire floors can quickly chill your rabbit. Use fleece liners, mats, or bedding to create a warm barrier between your rabbit and cold surfaces.

🚫 Keep Away from Drafts
Avoid placing your rabbit’s enclosure near doors, windows, or areas where cold air can blow directly onto them.

🌙 Extra Bedding at Night
Temperatures often drop overnight, so adding extra fleece, bedding, or hay in the evening can help keep your rabbit warm while they sleep.
