Guinea Pig Cage FAQs

Aim for at least 0.70cm square for each guinea pig (males need at least 100cm square each). Guinea pigs need more space than a lot of commercial hutches and cages allow, as they need to exercise, express their natural behaviours and do zoomies!

Key points:

  • Bigger is always better, especially for males and larger groups, to reduce stress and fighting and allow natural exercise.
  • Multi‑level petstore cages are often not always suitable for guinea pigs - these often have ramps that are too steep and upper levels that are too small to be of any benefit or safety for a guinea pig.

Why Ozzy Cages help with size:
Ozzy Cages are modular panel systems (similar to C&C), so you can choose a layout that immediately exceeds minimums and then expand later if you add more piggies, instead of being stuck with a too‑small commercial plastic cage or hutch.

Guinea pigs need a stable, quiet but social location, protected from extreme temperatures, predators and drafts. They cope poorly with sudden temperature swings and overheating.

Location tips:

  • Keep them indoors (or in a very well‑insulated, weather‑proof space) away from direct sun, drafts, and damp; avoid garages and sheds that get very hot or cold. The enclosure also needs to be secure from predators like snakes, dogs, foxes or hawks.
  • Place the cage in a room where people pass through regularly (like a living area), but not somewhere with constant loud noise (right next to a TV or speakers).
  • Elevating the cage a little (on a stand) helps pigs feel safer and makes cleaning and interaction easier.

Why Ozzy Cages help with location:

Because Ozzy Cages are lightweight, open‑topped grids with a separate base, they’re easier to move, reconfigure, or put on a stand compared to one-piece cages or bulky hutches, so you can fine‑tune the spot that best suits your home and your piggies’ comfort.

The main priorities are: solid flooring, chew‑safe and sturdy walls, and excellent ventilation. Wire‑floor cages and aquariums are not suitable.

Avoid:

  • Wire or mesh floors (they cause pain and foot injuries).
  • Tiny pet‑shop cages and glass tanks with poor airflow and insufficient space.

Why Ozzy Cages’ construction is beneficial:
Ozzy Cages use grid panels for the sides and a removable corflute‑style base, giving a combination of solid, easy-to-clean flooring and very open ventilation. Standard Ozzy Cages come fully kitted, avoiding common issues like wrong bar spacing or unsuitable components.

Bedding must be absorbent, low‑dust, and comfortable for sensitive feet and lungs. Guinea pigs have delicate respiratory systems and sit in their bedding constantly, so material choice really matters.

We recommend:

  • Ozzy Cage Fleece Liners - these are soft, reusable, and pair well with flat, roomy cages.
  • Paper‑based bedding or kiln‑dried soft wood shavings (not cedar), which are absorbent and relatively low dust.

Avoid:

  • Scented/treated shavings and dusty materials that can irritate airways.
  • Towels and newspaper. These work well as underlayers but not as a sole bedding option as they absorb moisture and stay wet.
  • Hay - While hay is essential to a piggy's diet, it shouldn't be used as the only bedding in the cage. We recommend dedicated hay piles or kept off the ground in a hay rack or bag.

Why Ozzy Cages work well with bedding:
Their rectangular, flat‑bottom design fits bedding easily while keeping it contained. This makes it easier to run a hygienic, low‑dust setup, compared with narrow, curved commercial cages that waste bedding or don’t fit standard liners.

Ozzy Cages follow the same general principles as other C&C systems used around the world: big footprint, open ventilation, solid base, and modular design.

Key advantages:

  • Space‑first design: They are sold in sizes that already meet or exceed common minimum recommendations for 2+ guinea pigs, unlike many pet‑shop cages that are often too small or unsafe.
  • Modular and expandable: You can add panels to expand for extra pigs or create different layouts (L‑shape, 2x5, 2x6 etc.), letting you adapt the cage as your herd and room layout change.
  • Easy enrichment: The long, open layout leaves ample room for hides, tunnels, hay stations, and running lanes, encouraging natural behaviour and reducing boredom‑related issues.
  • Better human–pig interaction: Open‑top, waist‑height setups make it easier to spot‑clean, monitor health, and interact gently with your pigs without reaching down into a deep box or hutch.
  • Good value over time: Because they are roomy and adaptable, you are less likely to need to replace the entire cage as your set‑up evolves, which is financially and practically more efficient than upgrading from a succession of small cages.
