Sounds and Behaviour

Rabbits are usually quiet, but they’re far from silent. From happy tooth purrs to dramatic thumps, your bunny has plenty to say — you just need to know what to listen for!

Here are the key sounds every rabbit parent should recognise:

--------------------------------------------------------

🐰 Tooth Purring (Contentment)

Sound: brbrbrbr / soft grinding

What it means: Happy, relaxed, safe

A gentle, quiet tooth grind — often felt more than heard — is a rabbit’s version of purring. You’ll notice this when they’re being cuddled, stroked, or settling down for a nap. It’s a very good sign!

🐰 Loud Tooth Grinding (Pain or discomfort)

Sound: grrk… grrk… grrk

What it means: Pain, stress, or illness

Unlike soft purring, this is louder, slower, and more forceful. If you hear this, especially with hunched posture or reduced appetite, it may signal discomfort and a vet check is recommended.

🐰 Honking / Oinking (Excitement or hormones)

Sound: honk honk / oink oink

What it means: Happy, playful, or feeling romantic

Often heard during zoomies or when circling your feet. It’s common in unneutered rabbits but can also just mean they’re excited to see you.

🐰 Clucking (Curiosity or attention-seeking)

Sound: soft cluck cluck

What it means: Mild excitement or wanting attention

A gentle, chicken-like sound some rabbits make when exploring or asking for food or pats.

🐰 Grunting (Annoyance or warning)

Sound: grrnt / huff

What it means: “Back off!”

Usually happens when they feel territorial or irritated — like when you reach into their space or move their belongings. It’s a warning before a nip.

🐰 Growling (Anger)

Sound: low grrrrr

What it means: Very unhappy or defensive

Stronger than a grunt. Often paired with lunging or boxing. Give them space and let them calm down.

🐰 Squealing / Screaming (Fear or severe pain)

Sound: high-pitched EEEEEK!

What it means: Extreme distress

This is rare but serious. Rabbits only scream when terrified or badly hurt. Immediate attention is needed.

🐰 Whimpering / Soft squeaks (Discomfort or baby sounds)

Sound: tiny eep eep

What it means: Mild stress, protest, or young kits calling

Baby rabbits vocalise more often. Adult rabbits may squeak if startled or unhappy with handling.

🐰 Thumping (Foot stomp)

Sound: THUMP!

What it means: Alarm or warning

Not a vocal sound, but very important communication. A strong back-foot stomp warns others of danger or expresses frustration (“I do not approve of this situation!”).

🐰 Quiet Snoring

Sound: soft zzz or wheezy breathing

What it means: Deep sleep

Totally normal in relaxed rabbits. Very cute. Very meme-worthy.

Quick Tip

Because rabbits are naturally quiet prey animals, changes in sound can be an early clue that something’s wrong. If your bunny suddenly becomes noisy, stops making their usual happy sounds, or starts grinding teeth loudly, it’s worth checking in with your vet.
